Allergy Treatment in Jacksonville

Full-Service Emergency Room and Urgent Care Under One Roof

The purpose of a healthy immune system is to recognize threatening foreign substances and destroy them — however, sometimes, the immune system overreacts to an irritant called an allergen, even though the substances are harmless to most other people. Itchy eye, nasal congestion and sneezing are common for allergy sufferers, but sometimes an allergy can be much more than a mild nuisance. Some allergy sufferers sustain severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock. Severe allergic reactions should always be treated in an emergency room.

There are multiple types of allergies, and people can be allergic to almost anything. The most common allergy types are related to:

  • Animals
  • Chemicals
  • Food
  • Insects
  • Medications
  • Seasonal changes

When Should I Go to the Emergency and Urgent Care Center for Allergies?

You may wonder if you just have to “tough it out” when it comes to allergies or if you need immediate treatment. At UF Health Jacksonville Emergency and Urgent Care Centers, we encourage patients to come to our facility for any allergies. Some mild allergy symptoms aren’t dire emergencies, but an urgent care facility can help identify your allergy triggers and help you feel better. However, if the allergy symptoms are severe, don’t wait for the condition to improve — go immediately to the nearest emergency facility.

Call 911 if you notice symptoms of a severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis, such as:

  • Chest tightness, wheezing, coughing and inability to get a full breath
  • Lip, tongue, face or throat swelling
